How Masina Was Born

Late 2022

Witnessing Injustice

Several young community activists from different parts of Uganda began documenting stories of unlawful arrests, intimidation during peaceful gatherings, harassment of journalists, and excessive force against civilians. Many citizens were afraid to speak publicly after witnessing friends and fellow activists detained or threatened.

The Turning Point

A Peaceful Gathering Disrupted

During a peaceful youth discussion in Kampala about unemployment, corruption, and freedom of speech, security officers reportedly disrupted the gathering and detained several participants — including student leaders, local musicians, bloggers, and community volunteers. Most were later released, but the experience exposed the vulnerability of ordinary citizens.

Weeks After

Building in Secret

A small network of volunteers began meeting secretly in homes, university hostels, churches, and community spaces to discuss how citizens could safely organize, educate communities about their rights, and support victims of abuse. Informal conversations became structured planning.

Early 2023

Masina Organization Is Born

The founders agreed Uganda needed an organization focused not only on exposing injustice, but also on rebuilding hope, empowering young people, and creating peaceful pathways for civic engagement. The name "Masina" symbolizes resilience, courage, and the determination of ordinary people to rise above fear and oppression.

Today

A Growing Movement

Masina Organization continues to work alongside communities across Uganda to defend freedoms, challenge violence and intimidation, and inspire a generation that believes change is possible through peaceful action, solidarity, and truth.
